The Name of the Rose Tina Božan

Project description
The design of the layout and typeface for Umberto Eco’s book The Name of the Rose (1980) was conceived to enhance understanding of its creation context. The research starts by examining theories of postmodernism and intertextuality as key period determinants, forming the novel’s compositional basis. A parallel is drawn between postmodernism and the Middle Ages as interconnected periods. The book’s layout follows the golden ratio, with three categories of footnotes serving as reminders or comments. The typeface is modeled on the proportions of medieval manuscripts, preserving the construction and elements of Gothic script, and is used on the cover and introductory pages.
