The Balvenie Grotesque is a custom typeface designed as a part of the new visual identity and packaging for the single malt whisky The Balvenie. Early 20th century grotesque types from Edinburgh’s Miller & Richard type foundry were used as a starting point. The compact three-weight type family came about through a collaborative process with the client. The letterforms are fairly wide, low in contrast while the acute angles feature soft roundings reminiscent of analog printing techniques. Each glyph comes in a few slight variations that change automatically, avoiding repetition and creating more dynamic word images.
