About the Exhibition

The Exhibition of Croatian Design is the central and most important professional design event in Croatia, bringing together the highest quality design works created over a two-year period in all areas of design, including visual communications and graphic design, industrial design, packaging design, spatial intervention systems, interaction design and electronic media, critical or conceptual design, fashion and clothing design, etc. In addition to presenting the best of professional work of Croatian designers, design studios and agencies since 1999, the exhibition includes a student section that provides insight into all current achievements in higher design education. The reputation and importance of these exhibitions is also evidenced by the fact that since 2010 they have been held at the Museum of Arts and Crafts, one of the most visited and most prestigious museum institutions in the region.

Given the special circumstances caused by the coronavirus epidemic, as well as the significant damage suffered by the Museum of Arts and Crafts in this year’s earthquake, the majority of the exhibition is held on the new online platform, while the Museum will host the Exhibition of Awarded Works 19/20, with the promotion of the printed catalog, ie the publication Review of Croatian Design 19/20 and the official Award Ceremony.

The works submitted to this exhibition undergo rigorous critical selection by the Selection Committee and the International Jury composed of some of the highest authorities in various fields of professional design, including not only designers but also curators, critics and design theorists. The selection of works and the awards are decided by the Selection Committee and the International Jury consisting of Sanja Bachrach Krištofić, Karlo Kazinoti, Željko Serdarević, Svjetlana Despot, Marko Pavlović, Lea Vene, Vedran Židanik, Bojan Hadžihalilović (BiH) and John L. Walters (UK).

This year’s categories are: Visual Communication Design, Industrial / Product Design, Digital Media Design and Interaction Design, Packaging Design, Fashion and Clothing Design, Spatial and Graphic Interventions and Systems, Integrated Project / Product and Concept / Initiative / Critical Design. HDD Awards and Special Recognitions are awarded in all categories. This year, a special HDD Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to industrial designer Blaženka Kučinac. The best work in the selection for the Exhibition of Croatian Design 19/20 will be awarded the Grand Prize of the Croatian Designers Association.

The printed publication Croatian Design Review 19/20 is a fundamental two-year publication that provides an overview of the highest quality Croatian design output from the past two years. An extensive publication of approximately 300 pages presents works selected for exhibition as part of the biennial Exhibition of Croatian Design 19/20. The publication is more than just a catalog. The first segment includes essays and interviews of domestic and international experts in the field of practice, critique and theory of design, both on current and on methodological, social and cultural aspects of design practice itself. In this sense, the Croatian Design Reviews are an effort to contextualize, critically interrogate and archive the current moment of Croatian design. The second and largest segment of the publication contains a detailed presentation of all selected works in seven categories: visual communications, product / industrial design, fashion design, el. media, etc. In addition to graphic and photographic reproductions, all works are presented in short texts that explain the starting points, ideas and process of project implementation. The third segment of the publication presents the activities of the Croatian Designers Association in the period between the two biennial exhibitions. The publication is bilingual (Croatian-English).
