The book Starter is a verbal and visual representation of sourdough bread made from starter, but it also reflects the way Bread Club bakeries developed. Sourdough is known for its crispy crust and soft crumb, with unique and unexpected textures. The book’s covers, made of two parts, are tied to the concept of the starter: the hard part represents the bread crust, while the soft binding symbolises its interior and the complex dough development system, evident in the cross-section. The actual bread cross-section was hand-printed on the pages to create chapter covers, and the increasing font size in the book’s numbering symbolises the rising dough and sourdough culture.
