The Rijeka City Library’s (GKR) new building marks the beginning of a new era in which the library literally creates space for new content. And so does its logo, with the common asterisk but in an unexpected place. Since the library was defined in the brief as “serious thoughts in an amusing way”, it opened up the opportunity to approach signage with quirky details. Alongside functional signs used for navigating through the library, different messages, wordplays and book titles are also scattered in unexpected places. In the environment of colourful books and diverse materials, black and/or white signs were an obvious choice, and the asterisk became an important and recognizable element in wayfinding.
